How to transfer a website from one host to another

aws web server hosting

You need to take certain steps before you can transfer your website. These include backing up your website, moving files and changing your DNS settings to point to your new host.

This can be done by contacting your host and changing your nameservers to point at their servers. This process could take a couple of hours or a whole day, depending upon your new hosting company and how fast they can propagate the changes.

Once you've set up the new server, you can start transferring your site files and databases. It can be very easy to do, depending on your site's structure. FileZilla and other FTP clients can be used for transferring static HTML sites.

cloud service

It is important to import the database of dynamic websites (sites which have a data base) from the previous host. This can either be done through phpMyAdmin or using the tools provided in cPanel.

Your new hosting Account

Once the transfer is complete, you will need to create an account with your new host. This will allow you to gain access to your website and manage it with a username and password. You can either do it from the control panels of your new hosts or contact their customer service team.

Transferring your domain

If you already have a domain registered through DreamHost then the EPP/transfer authorisation code that was provided to you by your previous registrar should work. This code can be found on the transfer service page at your current registry or in your Control Panel under the Domains tab. If not, you'll need to ask your new registrar about assistance.

Getting your new IPS tags

The IPS tag for your new registrar is required if you are moving your domain to them from DreamHost. You can find this on the registrar's 'transfers page' or in the Domains> section of your panel under the Transfers> tab.

Alternately, you can contact the new domain registrar directly and request that they send you your tag. Make sure you clarify that this is a domain transfer and not a registration change.

Testing your site

Test it to ensure that everything is working as expected before you switch the DNS of your website to the new host. This will give you the opportunity to identify any issues that might arise with your new host. Test all your links, menus and other details to make sure they work properly.

Backups and databases

Backup any data which may be unavailable for a couple of days, until your website is fully operational again. Cloudflare or Bitnami is a good way to accomplish this.
